A clear idea makes the consultation faster and the result better. None of this replaces your artist's own creative input — they'll usually improve on a raw idea, not just execute it literally.
- Collect a few clear reference images for style, not just subject matter.
- Think about placement, size and how it will read at both up close and a glance.
- Consider how the piece might age and how it fits with any tattoos you already have.
- Be ready to explain what the tattoo means to you, if it means something.
- Stay open to your artist's suggestions — that's part of what you're paying for.
- Bring questions about size, placement or style to the consultation, not just the appointment.
